People make it happen? American Venture Capitallists are even in the government making whatever they want happen. They are having a profound impact on AI policy including the recent AI action plan. The stock market is being gamed more than ever before with the AI bull market. AGI is a marketing device for these actors.
The piece in the Guardian has way too many links which appear as Orange highlights making it very difficult to read. Although I'm sure your ideas are sound.

AGI isn’t inevitable. It’s economically staged to look inevitable.
Alignment keeps failing not because we don’t know how—but because current systems benefit from pretending it’s unsolvable.
